The Three Main Tenses
Verbs in Tamil are conjugated to show when an action occurs. The three primary tenses (காலங்கள்) are Past, Present, and Future. Each tense is indicated by adding a specific tense marker to the verb root before the pronoun ending. The choice of marker can depend on the verb root itself.
இறந்தகாலம் (Past Tense)
The past tense indicates an action that has already happened. The common markers are -த்- (-th-), -ட்- (-ṭ-), -ற்- (-ṟ-), and -இன்- (-in-).
Verb Root: படி (paḍi) - to read
நான் படித்தேன் (Nāṉ paṭittēṉ - I read)
Rule: படி (root) + த் (past) + ஏன் (I) = படித்தேன்
Verb Root: சாப்பிடு (sāppiṭu) - to eat
அவன் சாப்பிட்டான் (Avan sāppiṭṭāṉ - He ate)
Rule: சாப்பிடு (root) + ட் (past) + ஆன் (he) = சாப்பிட்டான்
Verb Root: வாங்கு (vāṅku) - to buy
அவள் வாங்கினாள் (Avaḷ vāṅkiṉāḷ - She bought)
Rule: வாங்கு (root) + இன் (past) + ஆள் (she) = வாங்கினாள்
நிகழ்காலம் (Present Tense)
The present tense describes an action that is happening now. The common markers are -கிறு- (-kiṟu-) and -கின்று- (-kiṉṟu-).
Verb Root: எழுது (eḻutu) - to write
அவள் எழுதுகிறாள் (Avaḷ eḻutukiṟāḷ - She is writing)
Rule: எழுது (root) + கிறு (present) + ஆள் (she) = எழுதுகிறாள்
Verb Root: பேசு (pēsu) - to speak
நாங்கள் பேசுகிறோம் (Nāṅkaḷ pēcukiṟōm - We are speaking)
Rule: பேசு (root) + கிறு (present) + ஓம் (we) = பேசுகிறோம்
எதிர்காலம் (Future Tense)
The future tense indicates an action that will happen later. The common markers are -ப்- (-pp-) and -வ்- (-v-).
Verb Root: பார் (pār) - to see
நீங்கள் பார்ப்பீர்கள் (Nīṅkaḷ pārppīrkaḷ - You will see)
Rule: பார் (root) + ப் (future) + ஈர்கள் (you-formal) = பார்ப்பீர்கள்
Verb Root: வா (vā) - to come
அவர்கள் வருவார்கள் (Avarkaḷ varuvārkaḷ - They will come)
Rule: வா (root becomes வரு) + வ் (future) + ஆர்கள் (they) = வருவார்கள்
